D stands for denier – this is a unit of density based on the length and weight of a fiber. A single thread would be considered 1 denier. Generally speaking, the higher the denier count, the more durable the material will be. If you're looking for something that can stand up to outdoor wear and tear, you want to go with the highest denier.
